In the 8th Century in Khurasan (modern Iran) the father of chemistry Jabir ibn Hayyan set down to record a groundbreaking work. He believed that the four known elements, earth, fire, air and water each contained four basic qualities. By rearranging these qualities he could turn any substance into another in a process known as alchemy but he needed something special, a substance called al-iksir or what the Greeks called xerion.
Xerion was a powder derived from the legendary philosopher’s stone, which was said to exist all around, yet went unnoticed. Finding the philosopher’s stone was the most sought after goal of alchemists of his age as it was believed to be not only the key to alchemy but also to immortality. By rearranging the qualities of one metal, another could be created as long as xerion was available to aid in the transformation. He recorded the qualities that needed to be changed and to what other qualities in what would become known as the xerion matrix.
